weekly menu: February 16-22

Linnea slipped and fell on the slide at daycare this week, and wound up with an impressive fat lip.

She's doing well, even eating spoonfuls of lemon juice (say wut).

This week's menu:
  • double batch of eggplant puree
  • arugula, barley, beet, feta, and edamame salad
  • mac and cheese with peas
  • cornmeal waffles (kind of a bust, but probably more the waffle maker than the recipe)

"every last one of us can do better than give up."

I happen to believe that America is dying of loneliness, that we, as a people, have brought into the false dream of convenience, and turned away from a deep engagement with our internal lives–those fountains of inconvenient feeling–and toward the frantic enticements of what our friends in the Greed Business call the Free Market.

We're hurtling through time and space and information faster and faster, seeking that network connection. But at the same time we're falling away from our families and our neighbors and ourselves...

[Sugar] understands that attention is the first and final act of love, and that the ultimate dwindling resource in the human arrangement isn't cheap oil or potable water or even common sense, but mercy.

weekly menu: February 9-15

Tough week. Sick kid, dead phone, too much work. We also made the poor decision to visit IKEA on a Saturday afternoon. I'm still decompressing.

weekly menu: January 26 -- February 1

  • turkey meatballs (adapted the beef and lamb meatball recipe from Jerusalem)
  • olive oil granola (with no coconut flakes - ugh)
  • Francis Lam's eggplant puree that is supposed to be served with pasta, but I served with brown rice and a squeeze of tomato paste instead. (I am way excited about the way the eggplant breaks down in this recipe, because it's pretty much the only way I can stand eggplant)
  • polenta, braised kale, fried egg
  • big batch of black beans for random Tex-Mex-ish dishes
